Prevention

Prevention of FASD is very easy:

A: Regular pregnancy tests. If your going to have a drink - test first (at least once a week)

B: If you know your pregnant - don't drink alcohol.

Because all alcohol contains a toxic substance called a teratogen - that is a substance that interferes with the normal development of the fetus. Specifically alcohol is a neurobehavioural teratogen and that means its greatest effect is on the brain and in particular the behaviour centres of the brain which are susceptible to damage the whole way through the pregnancy. Because alcohol affects so many sites in the brain, researchers believe that alcohol is far worse for the developing fetus than any other abused drug. So the only way to prevent FASD is to not have any chance of a toxic substance like teratogen in your blood when you could conceve or be carrying a baby!
